Polarization Dependent Loss Emulator

Ottawa, ON - March 19, 2002

OZ Optics Limited, a world leading supplier of fiber optic products for existing and next-generation optical networks, introduces a Polarization Dependent Loss (PDL) Emulator for test and measurement.

These Emulators are ideal for calibrating PDL measurement systems or for evaluating the effect of PDL on optical components and networks. Return losses from these Emulators exceed -60dB, while insertion losses are less than 2dB, including the induced PDL losses.

The standard unit works by transmitting light from a fiber through free space and then back to a receiving fiber. Between the two fibers an optical window is introduced. The transmission of light through the window is different for the two perpendicular polarizations. This introduces a predetermined level of polarization dependent loss. PDL levels from 0.05dB to 1dB can be produced.

OZ Optics offers both fixed and adjustable PDL Emulators. Fixed Emulators are precisely calibrated and serve as references for PDL measurement systems. Adjustable Emulators allow one to test the effect of PLD on system stability and bit error rates. Systems for wavelengths between 1290nm and 1620nm are offered as standard equipment.
